“I know that like every woman of the people, I have more strength than I appear to have.”
– Eva Peron.

Based on the life of Eva Peron, the self-proclaimed first lady of Argentina, Evita is a dynamic and dramatic show-stopper of a musical and the newest rendition at Dubai Opera is no different.

We were lucky enough to be invited to the opening night of Evita at Dubai Opera, a stunning venue known for its dreamy interior and world-class performances. As is common in Dubai architecture, the décor of the opera-house has been designed to encompass both modern and traditional elements. The exterior of the building is clean and simplistic, made up almost entirely of floor to ceiling glass windows. A marquee style sign lights up the words ‘Dubai Opera’, set against the backdrop of the stunningly modern Downtown Dubai with Burj Khalifa at its forefront. The downstairs reception area boasts a unique astrological theme, allowing guests to find their star signs written in Arabic script against the polished flooring. Enter inside the theatre itself though, and you are transported to a much more traditional venue with its plush red chairs and intricate gold detailing. It was our first time at the venue and needless to say it was love at first sight…

In true Dubai fashion, guests flock to the opera in their finest clothes. If you’re heading to the venue, take the opportunity to wear something fancy! Guests are expected to ‘dress in-keeping with the venue’s theme and décor’ which for us was part of the fun! Being such a gorgeous place, there are so many photo opportunities so we were so pleased to have made the effort. Put on your glad rags, you’re going to the Opera!

While we’re certainly not theatre critics, we won’t be alone in saying that the performance itself was outstanding. Incredible vocals, mesmerising sets and dramatic acting meant we were hooked from start to finish. As a character, Evita was both easy to love and to despise; most likely due to the Madalena Alberto’s powerful portrayal of the first lady’s flawed persona. As the final rendition of the classic ‘Don’t cry for me Argentina’ was sung, the actors took their bows and the audience erupted into applause with a much deserved standing-ovation.

Of course, all good things must come to an end and Evita showed at the Dubai Opera for a limited period. Still, there are so many amazing shows coming up including ballets, musicals, theatre performances and musical concerts. Check out dubaiopera.com to see all upcoming performances!
